Flying Start Challenge

Posted on December 19th, by IT Support in Information for Students. No Comments

On Monday a group of year 9 students took part in the flying start challenge, in teams they had to design and build a glider.

The teams were;

Will Rogers, Miles Stewart and Harvey Clarke (Ma Ha Wa)

Georgia Morris, Emma Fisk and Erin Martin (Error 404)

Aravind Pillai, Ben Porter, Oliwier Filipowicz and Owen Horseman (don’t let Owen throw it!)

Isabelle Bennett, Ruby Stevens and Robyn Hambly (Team triangle)

Bobby Tom Gregory, Tytus Biziuk, Dylan Murray and Andriano Georgiou (Wing it!)

A group of five expert engineers from Airbus came to share their knowledge and support the groups as they developed and made their gliders.

The students worked hard to create their gliders and each group had their own ideas of what would fly furthest.  They had to stick to a budget for materials and had a time limit to build and test their gliders.

The five teams had a fly off and the top three teams will be going through to the reginal finals at Bristol Aerospace in February, where they will be competing against schools across the city for a place in the final.

Between now and the regionals, the teams will need to revise for a quiz and create a poster to show the development process, designs and knowledge of forces within flight that they will present to a panel on the day.

Good luck to MaHaWa, Error 404 and Don’t let Owen throw it who will be representing Henbury at the reginal finals.
